the christmas wish? that somehow a few more people would look at, and voice appreciation for, my art. as it is, i'm not a needy guy - but really, i've been on DA for well over 3 years. i can't help but feel like 540-something pageviews is kinda sad, considering i've posted 149 deviations. so, if you love the Rookster, tell a friend this christmas.
Merry Christmas, Chanukah, or whatever you decide to celebrate.

I looked at the 5 steps of your ring knot and know steps 2-5. So how do you figure out step 1 in your method? Myself, I use boxy guideline galore, which stands out on the finished product in a decidedly untraditional fashion. You seems to have a more freeform style that comes from sheer talent that I probably won't be able to duplicate. However, is there any hints or resources you can point me to? I always love trying something new.
And you've been on dA for 3 years with only 500 pageviews? You've got good stuff here! How does that happen? Plus,

the first step - creating the path of the line - can be done in a million different ways. there are two in particular that i've tried, and one which has become my favorite. i've never really used a grid, or at least not graph paper. the method i don't use much anymore is to draw the spaces in between the lines instead of the lines themselves - for example, when two parallel lines intersect two parallel lines, there is a rectangular space in the middle.
what i do now, particularly for the ring knots like the one you mention above, is kind of hard to explain; i draw a circle, and then i treat the circle as if it were an infinitely elastic piece of string - i pull in and twist and bend sections of the line, and perform equal/opposite manipulations on the other side of the circle to keep the whole thing symmetrical. the important thing to remember while doing this is that the line always needs to connect back to where it started - if you keep this rule, you end up with a single-lined knot.
like i said, it's complicated. if #theknotters gets me a few more pageviews, i might do some kind of tutorial - for now my site doesn't get enough play to warrant it.
thanks again, and compliments on your stuff as well. it looks like you've got the basics of continuity and patterning down pat - i'm interested to see where you go from here.
